The station is open April 21, 1908. Comes from the rue du Chateau-d'Eau that name since the early nineteenth century, the crossroads of the Rue du Faubourg du Temple and the Boulevard du Temple formed a plot (the location of bastion of the door Temple in the precincts of Charles V), which was known until 1879, instead of Château-d'Eau. His name came from the fountain of Girard who decorated since 1811. The plot became the Republic Square and the fountain was moved up Félix-Éboué.
